I got laid off — and I’m writing a book on leadership in UX.

I was let go from my job as Head of Design at Panther in April as part of a company-wide layoff.

I’m also writing a book on leadership in design.

Here’s why those two things make sense together.

My year at Panther taught me a ton. I joined a rocket ship of a company with a lot of work ahead of me, and met and worked with some fantastic people. I was also reminded that building rocketships is a risky business, and that so much is out of my hands. There are certainly things I could’ve done better as a designer and leader — I am human, after all — and I’m doing the work to learn from my mistakes and heal from the pain of the experience.

But the book pre-dates me leaving my job, as I’ve long been fascinated by what leadership looks like for every designer, everywhere, in every seat and company — not just those with lots of experience or big titles.

When I got laid off, I of course considered shelving the book. I mean, what could I possibly have to share of value with folks? My inner voice isn’t always very kind to me (which I’m sure is something people can relate to):

Me, the so-called “leader” who clearly didn’t lead very well? The one who just failed his team? The one who wasn’t able to keep his own job? Not much of a leader, right?

Yet as the shock of the news settled in, my conviction only deepened. I’m even more interested in understanding how it is that we learn and grow as designers. What leadership looks like no matter where you sit.

And I feel that if there’s ever a time where my particular take on leadership is needed in the world; that it be as authentic, transparent, joyful and human as possible — that time is certainly now.

So my job ends, but the book and my learning journey continues.

I have two asks of my community:

  1. Are you a designer? I want to talk to you! I want to learn from you. Whether you’re just in the beginning of your career or have decades under your belt, I want your take on what “leadership” looks like to you. What it means to you. Sign up here.
  2. Since writing a book doesn’t pay the bills (shocking!), I’m also looking for contract work. My preference is to focus on health/wellness and sustainability, but if you need a seasoned, human, designer and leader-in-progress — hit me up.

Thanks y’all. The journey continues ✌️
