What makes a Superstar?

Steve Montgomery has been an active board member of the Superstar Foundation since it’s inception in 2007. He has been working at Living Classrooms Foundation since 1996, focused primarily on case management and program design for the Project SERVE workforce development program. He brings to Superstar Foundation 18 years of direct service experience, and he is also an active volunteer assisting each year with the judging process to select “Superstars” and administer the Veronica Awards.

So what makes a “Superstar”? According to Steve Montgomery, three things really count:

  1. A Superstar will consistently use data to evaluate participant progress, and seek to understand both successes and failures.
  2. A Superstar has strong management skills. Maintaining accurate participant records, tracking primary outcomes, and communicating data results to both staff and participants are critical to meeting identified program goals.
  3. A Superstar recognizes the importance of collaboration, and strives to be a role model within the organization. This ability to perform inspiring work as an individual, and provide motivation to coworkers, results in the improved success of the work environment.

Steve’s interest in working as a board member for Superstar Foundation is reinforced by his curiosity to see what other organizations are doing. Understanding how other case workers and organizations use data to drive outcomes with their participants helps him do a better job at Living Classrooms. As the manager of the Case Management Department for Project SERVE, he facilitates the efforts of four caseworkers toward the initial goal of improving job readiness. Job retention, combined with measurable progress toward self sufficiency, become the primary long range goals.

He also enjoys learning about other organizations’ methodology in collecting and analyzing their data. Understanding how an organization manages data in both directions (top down and bottom up) impacts the way he approaches workforce development and program design. Steve uses what he learns from high performing social workers and innovative organizations to engage and challenge the work at hand.
