Patient engagement is the meaningful engagement of patients in health research — it is research done with or by the public, rather than for, to, or about them.

NL SUPPORT’s Patient Advisory Council (PAC) provides advice and guidance on the work of NL SUPPORT, Quality of Care NL, & Choosing Wisely NL in the determination of patient-oriented research priorities, the engagement of patients in research projects, and planned public outreach activities.

Members of our PAC co-authored the article: The Role of Patient Advisory Councils in Health Research: Lessons From Two Provincial Councils in Canada.

This article describes patient advisory councils (PACs) in Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta, their governance structures, primary functions, key challenges, etc. Members from both councils recount lessons learned and offer suggestions for others interested in advisory councils as a mechanism for patient engagement in any health research project.
