The S&P 500 was flat in September while the Dow Jones gained 1.3% and the Nasdaq fell 0.8%, respectively.

Since the inception of the SCP SMB Index in January 4, 2016 (where 100% is no change), here are the returns till August 30, 2018:

  • SCP SMB Index — 210.65%
  • S&P 500–144.78%
  • Nasdaq — 164.11%
  • Dow Jones — 154.29%

Monthly gains

During June the SCP SMB Index climbed from $135.95 at the end of August to $138.90.

In comparison, during the month of September, other benchmark indices made the following moves:

  • the S&P 500 was flat at 0% during the month of September
  • the Nasdaq fell 0.8% from the end of August
  • the Dow Jones rose 1.3% during September

The market cap of the top 5 companies (by market cap) accounts for ~57% of the total market cap of all 35 companies and therefore the movement of these 5 companies influence the SMB Index as a whole.

4 of the Top 5 constituents, experienced gains during the month of September, led by Square jumping 10.8% during the month, while First Data Corp declined 3.3%.
