WSL / Poullenot

The European leg starts this week, it has been a very intense season so far. Several surfers have taken the lead and only Toledo has won two events this year. Jordy has achieved, so far, the best records since 2012. And JJF has been progressing, his numbers are even better than 2016.

For sure the European leg will shake the season and bring even more surprises. Will we see eight different winners this year? Gabriel Medina has made three finals since 2012 at France, he is a strong contender.

The super 8 projections brings you the best surfers to pick for Fantasy Surfer, it just doesn't take into account the salary cap limit. Let's see the surfers that were chosen amongst the super 8 for France. If you had no salary cap, which surfers would you pick?

John John Florence — $11,500,000

  • Event Average Score: 14.88
  • Event Winning Percentage: 66.67%
  • FS average points: 161

As we said, JJF has been progressing his numbers. This year his AHS reached 16.35 points, It's something unimaginable. If he continues to progress what will we see next year? An average heat score of 17 points through the season?

Even though he is not on the first position of the WSL rank, his numbers are the best. He is the leader of the Stat Rank, several points ahead of the second place.

At France the surfer has the higher AHS. Taking into account the progression he had this year, we might see the number rising. All those facts together guarantees him on the first position of the super 8.

Julian Wilson — $10,000,000

  • Event Average Score: 13.18
  • Event Winning Percentage: 57.14%
  • FS average points: 113

Julian has great numbers at France. His winning percentage is only worst than JJF, Medina and Mick. However, the fact that places him on the second spot is his momentum. During the last five events Julian had no round 3 elimination, no other surfer has this mark, his momentum is just remarkable.

Jordy Smith — $12,500,000

  • Event Average Score: 13.07
  • Event Winning Percentage: 50%
  • FS average points: 95

Jordy is doing an incredible season, he is the only surfer with only one round3 elimination so far. His last result at France, however, is a round2 elimination. Before that, on 2014 the surfer reached the semifinal. Looking at his performance on 2017 we would say he is closer to that 2014 mark.

Gabriel Medina — $10,000,000

  • Event Average Score: 14.79
  • Event Winning Percentage: 78.57%
  • FS average points: 170

Medina is the surfer with the best winning percentage of France. Since 2014 the second half of the season is a turning moment for Medina, he starts to progress his numbers.

His last five appearances at France are two quarters and three finals, the surfer has no bad result at the venue since 2012. He is, no doubt, a very solid choice.

Adriano de Souza — $8,250,000

  • Event Average Score: 14.37
  • Event Winning Percentage: 50%
  • FS average points: 94

Adriano has one of the highest average scores at France, even though before 2014 he struggled to win round 3 at the venue. If Adriano loses early on France, be sure that it will happen with a high score. Momentum and past performance results places Adriano amongst the super 8

Filipe Toledo — $8,250,000

  • Event Average Score: 12.65
  • Event Winning Percentage: 50%
  • FS average points: 105

Toledo has won three of the last two events. His appearance at J-Bay was superb, surprised everyone. The momentum of the surfer guarantees him amongst the super 8. Even though Toledo hasn't show consistent results at France in the past, we know he has all capabilities to make the unpredictable happen.

Owen Wright — $8,750,000

  • Event Average Score: 13.39
  • Event Winning Percentage: 42.86%
  • FS average points: 103

2017 has been the best season for Owen Wright, he has progressed his AHS and Winning percentage. His last result at France was a quarter final finish (2015). This year, we expect Owen to deliver even better results at the venue. The AHS of the surfer at France is one of the highest, he knows how to deliver scores there.

Mick Fanning — $5,000,000

  • Event Average Score: 13.94
  • Event Winning Percentage: 63.16%
  • FS average points: 139

Fanning has the third best winning percentage of France, only Medina and JJF have better records. We all know the quality of the athlete, however for two consecutive events Mick has not advanced round 3. Even though this season has been his worst, at this price is difficult not to choose the surfer for the event.

Super 8 total cost: 74,250,00
