This year has been amazing for those who follow and watch the World Surf League championship tour. We have seen two surfers winning the competition one event before end of the season. Those were two solid wins in both Men and Women’s competition.

On this post, we are going to focus on the solid win of Tyler Wright and how she has upgraded her stats compared to past seasons. In the next post, we are going to tackle the victory of the young Hawaiian John John Florence.

For the sake of comparison, we are going to analyze numbers from the 2012 season until today. The goal is to grasp the changes compared her overall numbers and the numbers on every event of the season.

Tyler had the best stats Winning Percentage (WP) of the year and the third Average Heat Score (AHS), 78.57% and 13.8 respectively. It perfectly shows the importance of winning heats in the surf battle, just for reference the surfers that had better AHS were Carissa Moore (14.61) and Courtney Conlogue (14.69). Even though the AHS does not grasp the actual winning of a surfer, we would like to show you how Tyler has performed over the years compared to the overall AHS

Tyler AHS and Overall AHS of the year

The graph shows that normally she performs above the average. The winning percentage summarizes better the progress of a surfer in an year and we can see that Tyler has been improving her WP

Tyler’s season’s winning percentage over the years

It’s great to see Tyler improving her own numbers. I can’t wait to see how she is going to perform in the 2017 season. If she maintains those numbers will be a really tough season for the other surfers on tour

Tyler progress on the events to the 2016 season

For simplicity, we are going to present the progression she had in the events she won and in France, the event she was crowned world champion. At the end of the post we are going to present the progression of all events, but take in mind it is a huge graph.

Gold Coast

Tyler’s winning percentage at Gold Coast

Margaret River

Tyler’s winning percentage at Margaret River

Rio

Tyler’s winning percentage at Rio

Trestles

Tyler’s winning percentage at Trestles

France

Tyler’s winning percentage at France

You can see the dominance she already had in events like Margaret River and France, and she had improved at Gold Coast, Rio and Trestles. Tyler was able to only to improve at events she did ok, but also maintain quality on those she already performed great. To get a great summary, the only two events she didn’t performed great were Bells (50% WP) and Fiji (0% WP). On the other seven events of the season, so far, she performed with a Winning Percentage of at least 75%.

We are amazed by the results of Tyler Wright and can’t wait to see how she will perform at Maui

Here is the graph of the whole season so far
