“I like to dream about Portugal, and it’s less easy when you are there.” Maria de Medeiros

What can we add to this quote? Portugal it’s not the last discover when you talk about surfing in Europe. When you talk about well surfing in Europe; cause Portugal offers so much destinations, and it feeds so damn well your need to explore the big blue, that once you left, you’ll ask yourself why you waited so much to go there. Arrifana, is a perfect demonstration of this: you think it’s a dream, but it’s true.

SPOT DETAILS

Praia de Arrifana, located at South of Portugal, and only less than 50 kilometers far from Sagres, in Algarve, is an exposed beach and reef break, with consistent reliability. The beach break beneath the impressive cliff, is a good option for beginners, and it offers mainly left hand waves, ant it could usually be crowded. At the northern end of the beach, you’ll find the point break; a long, fast and heavy barreling wave, that starts working from two meters and holds up to triple overhead. Here you have to know what to do with this top class wave. Defenetely not a beginner wave. Best swell for Arrifana is from North West, and ideal winds are from North East, with good wave level at every stage of tide.

SPOT TIPS

Especially while surfing at point break, watch out for rocks; be careful of the two large on the inside. Localism here could be a problem because of the crowd, so respect surf etiquette to avoid useless troubles. The nearest airport to Arrifana is Faro Airport which is 86 kilometers away. Parking is not an issue, there are showers, and there are several surf schools with accomodations, courses and equipment rental. The very freshest fish and seafood are the principal ingredient of Algarve’s cuisine, so if you’re hungry, ask for a Cataplana de mariscos.
