There’s a reason why we love surfing. It’s not only adrenaline: the spiritual part fits perfectly with being surfers. You’re nature inside nature. Praia do Amado witnesses this. You arrive there, and realize that cliff and water are not borders, but part of your imagination revealed.
This is about Algarve. This is about Portugal.
SPOT DETAILS
Praia do Amado, South-west of Portugal, is located on the wild Costa Vicentina, near the city of Carrapateira, in the middle of Alentejano natural park. All around, eye-catching cliffs and green hills will be your only view while surfing. It’s a place with few signs of civilization, and even in high season it’s a quite spot. Praia do Amado is a beach break with several changing peaks, and is a wave for beginner/intermediate surfers. Spot starts working with half meter waves, and holds up to 2.5 meters. Best condition for surfing is North-West swell, with off-shore wind from East. Waves are both left and right, with consistent frequency in the year. Only at the weekend it could become crowded.
SPOT TIPS
First tip it’s about waiting. Don’t leave Praia do Amado before sunset, or you’ll miss an unique show. Even if is an isolated place, you can rent surfing material, or ask for surf courses directly on the beach. Near the spot there are a couple of small eating stands where you can eat cheap and good, or drink vegetal juices. When you go away from Praia do Amado, be sure to take the dirt track that connect with Carrapateira: it’s a panoramic road with an amazing view, that coasts the sea.
