A 7 days little journey with the Honula Team in California

Ph. by honula.com

7 days are not enough to explore a place like California, and we well know it. But we still were able to surf and enjoy this surfer’s Mecca, and though we didn’t have the chance to see everything or go everywhere our soul (and money) could bring us, we accepted the challenge of making this short guide for a fast surf trip.

Not everybody has the chance to spend more than one week on holidays, and usually when setting up our surf trip, we use to exclude some destinations that we assume are not suitable for a 7 days journey.

But we did it.

And this is our report.

Enjoy.

Day One — Santa Monica

Obviously you can surf all along Santa Monica and Venice Beach coast, but according to us the best spot is Topanga Beach (10 minutes far away from Santa Monica by car). Topanga Beach offers a right-hand wave that is surfable for beginners too, and is strongly recommended for experienced surfer only with big swells.
The best part in Topanga is the accommodation, that can be found in the middle of a wild nature (Anan kara)
A good and cheap place to eat is Jinya — Ramen bar (Ramen)

In order to rent the equipment you can go to ZJ Boarding house http://www.zjbh.com

Day Two — Santa Barbara

Ph. by www.travelgrom.com

One of the greatest spots is El Rincón. It is not so easy to find because there are two beaches with the same name, so you could get confused. To get to the right one, take the 84 exit and you will arrive in one of the best right-hands Worlwide. Do not forget your surf boots because there rocks hurt a lot).
If you like Mexican food, then go to SANDBAR, with reasonable prices and the chance to stay for a Californian party

Do not miss the chance to find the spots where you can admire the beauty of sea lions getting tanned and resting on the beach.

Day Three — Huntington beach

Ph by Honula.com

This is simply The Surf Town of California, no doubts about at all. Both sides of the pier offer right and left hand waves. There are a lot of surf shops near the beach to rent equipment.
Prices for accommodation are not cheap, we recommend a motel a little bit distant from the beach, but with a good quality and a really nice owner:
Beach Inn motel

If you miss pizza you can get some tasty slices at Zero Zero Pizza http://www.zerozero39-pizzeria.com
Do not go away without experiencing a typical Californian hamburger just at the end of the pier, at Ruby’s Surf City Diner https://www.rubys.com/locations/huntington-beach-pier/

Day Four — San Clemente

Ph. by www.daytrippen.com

Not easy to describe one of the best waves in the World, in Trestles Beach. If you are a beginner, really close there is San Onofre. Sharks too also like this part of California, so pay always attention if there is an alert!
If you have time to do some shopping, there are a lot of surfing outlets with very good prices, with products from the best brands:
The Surfer’s Outlet by Jack’s Surfboards
http://m.jackssurfboards.com
Our accommodation, with the right price and a just in front of Trestles, was San Clemente Surf Inn.
To have a fast breakfast or just to taste one açai bowl, go to Banzai Bowls http://www.banzaibowls.com

Day Five — Oceanside

Very good beach break with right and left-handed waves breaking at both sides of the pier. Respect surf etiquette and always be respectful with locals.
if you are a beginner or a long boarder, we recommend to stop in San Elijo State Beach, where you will find very big beach in front of a stunning natural landscape.

Day Six — San Diego

Ph. by Surfcamera.com

We had one of the best days of our surf trip at Mission Beach, a beach break with a right hand on the right side of the pier. This spot is good both for beginners and more experienced surfers, and usually you will find in the water some surf buddies: dolphins!
A really fantastic place to eat is the Bare Back Grill, where you can find organic meat hamburgers and veggie burgers
http://www.barebackgrill.com
Another good option to eat wraps, natural juices and açai bowls, is the Rum Jungle Cafe
http://www.rumjunglecafe.com

Day Seven — Ocean beach

Ph. by James Gubera

One of the place with the best chill out mood we visited, Ocean beach offers a consistent beach break with both right and left-hand waves
The Ocean Villa Inn is a great solution to stay near the spot, just in front of Dogs Beach
If Asiatic food is what you are looking for, then go to Saporo http://www.sapporoinob.com/contact-us/
