Kelly Slater lance son projet de vague artificielle et le résultat est assez bluffant !
C’est par une annonce il y a quelques heures sur les réseaux sociaux (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram et vidéos partagées sur Vimeo et Youtube) que le king Kelly Slater vient de dévoiler au travers notamment d’une vidéo son projet de vague artificielle sur lequel il travaillait déjà depuis de nombreuses années.
Le site se situe sur un lac artificiel en Californie à Lemoore.

Sa société “Kelly Slater Wave Company” entend très probablement révolutionner par sa technologie le concept de vague artificielle et le moins que l’on puisse dire en visionnant la vidéo est que Kelly Slater est en passe de réussir son pari.
Si vous voulez en savoir plus sur les vagues artificielles, Arte a réalisé un très chouette reportage diffusé il y a quelques jours et consultable ici. Et si aujourd’hui, les vagues artificielles sont “cools”, elles ne sont pas très hautes ni très creuses.
La vague que nous propose Kelly Slater est une vague de tube, relativement puissante, régulière, assez haute, bref, le rêve de tout surfeur !

“Now that the world title has been decided and events for the year have finished, I’m excited to show you what I’ve been sitting on for the past couple of weeks. For nearly ten years, my team and I have been working on creating the first truly world-class, high-performance, human-made waves. This is something I dreamt about as a kid. Through rigorous science and technology, we’ve been able to design and build what some said was impossible, and many very understandably never thought would actually happen. I’m proud to say we took our time to get it right, and the first fully-working prototype of the wave now exists (a huge personal thank you to everyone in our lab and on our team for seeing this through!). I’ll be sharing more details in the coming weeks and months but I can’t wait any longer to share a film of my experience surfing the wave for the first time, almost two weeks ago. La ligue de surf pro officialise le rachat de la société de Kelly Slater !
“ This partnership and technology will allow for advancements in athlete training, access to surfing for people of all levels and increased fan engagement globally”
La déclaration de Kelly Slater dans le communiqué de presse
“ While surfing for me will always be about adventure, travel and the ocean, this wave brings a new opportunity to the sport without taking away the soulfulness that attracted many of us to surfing in first place. Surfing great waves in a controlled environment adds a new dimension, as there is no hassling for waves, no stress over who got the best wave — they are all good. Everyone can relax, have fun and focus on improving their surfing. It’s beyond my dreams that this wave will be a canvas for the global advancement of this great sport in partnership with the WSL. It will democratize surfing and provide incredible training opportunities for athletes as well as aspirational surfers in areas with no ocean waves”
Du côté de la WSL, son représentant, Paul Speaker, actuel CEO déclare
“The WSL proudly represents the best in men’s and women’s competitive surfing globally, and the amazing man-made wave technology developed by Kelly Slater and his team is a revolutionary innovation that has the power to dramatically enhance every aspect of our sport. We share the same vision and passion for growing high-performance surfing, and are beyond excited to work together under one roof to bring the sport to levels and places never before possible. We do believe that all stakeholders — athletes, fans, broadcast and corporate partners — will be super energized by the advent of Championship Tour-level competition with man-made waves, but the ocean will always be our home, and the great waves on our tour will always remain the backbone of our competitive schedule. No firm plans have been made for the inclusion of a man-made wave-based competition. We will be evaluating all the possibilities in the coming months with the Commissioners’ Office and the WSL athletes”
Au vu de ses déclarations, on peut sans doute imaginer qu’à moyen-terme, une compétition du pro-Tour puisse se dérouler sur une vague artificielle.
Dans un très long papier publié sur Bloomberg dont le titre “The surfing legend’s top-secret machine could change the sport forever” évoque clairement un avant et un après cette création d’une vague artificielle, désormais opérationnelle, et surtout, après le rachat par la ligue de surf pro, donne une nouvelle dimension à ce sport (et ce, qu’on le souhaite ou non !)
Le blog Surfline publie une longue interview de Kelly Slater et il tient à) rassurer les éventuels avis critiques en déclarant notamment : ” This is not to replace anything in surfing; it’s just to be a supplement to surfing”
A noter aussi cette phrase prononcée par Paul Spekaer, le boss de la WSL,qui résume l’émerveillement de l’industrie du surf envers ce champion hors-norme qu’est Kelly Slater “His commitment to this project I would argue is probably the most significant contribution an athlete has ever made to his or her sport”
Le comité d’organisation des Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo 2020 a retenu le surf parmi cinq sports qui pourraient devenir des nouvelles disciplines olympiques. Décision sera prise à l’issue des jeux de Rio en Août 2016 et la rumeur fait état d’une compétition dans un bassin artificiel.
«La création des piscines à vagues est en train de révolutionner le surf et nous sommes convaincus que c’est le moment idéal pour gravir la dernière marche qui nous sépare de la plus grande scène sportive», avait déclaré en juin le président de la Fédération internationale de surf (ISA), Fernado Aguerre. On y est, avec #TheTest, répétition générale avec les surfeurs pros, on s’approche d’un futur événement du circuit pro qui pourrait se dérouler au Surf Ranch de Kelly Slater. A suivre !
Et ce n’est pas tout, puisque Kelly Slater a annoncé la création d’un deuxième “Surf Ranch” et cette fois-ci (après la Californie) ce sera dans son Etat en Floride.
La construction devrait commencer dès 2018 afin que la piscine soit opérationnelle en 2019.
