10 dream surf internships for fall 2016

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not so fond of the idea of idly staring at a computer screen all day at a job you got just to impress your parents. But hopefully you’ve accepted the fact that just about everyone who surfs, whether they admit it to themselves or not, wants to work in the surf industry. The competition (and the money) might seem discouraging, but there is something about working for a company or organization that has the same love for the water that makes going into an office that much more bearable.

1. Give and Surf Panama internship

Applicable Fields: international affairs, non-profit management, education

Description: Design an internship that meets your needs and helps you achieve your educational, personal & professional goals. Give and Surf Panama provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, either on-site in Bocas del Toro or by working remotely, while pursuing your professional goals and giving back to a community in need.

As a small non-profit organization, Give and Surf Panama relies on volunteers and interns to help lead classes, design and implement new programs, and operate as efficiently and effectively as possible in order to have the greatest impact possible in the community.

2. Surfing the Nations internship

Applicable Fields: humanitarian work, volunteering

Description: Surfing The Nations’ internship program is designed to train and equip young surfers and non-surfers in servant-leader humanitarian work to a variety of cultures, through a variety of outreaches as well as classroom-style teaching. If you want to learn to live by the STN motto of “Surfers Giving Back,” change and grow in a community environment, find adventure around every corner, develop your character and communication skills — this is the program for you! Interns are equipped with take-home skills to effectively make a difference both at home and abroad.

3. Sea State internship

Applicable Fields: social media, marketing, public relations, design

Description: Sea State is a surf/study abroad program for high school and college students. Work as a paid marketing intern to help Sea State grow their program enrollment. Assist with social media marketing, student outreach, classroom presentations, designing marketing materials, attend study abroad fairs, surf competitions and other relevant events and develop a marketing plan with measurable benchmarks for success.

4. International Surfing Association internship

Applicable Fields: business administration, communications, marketing, and media

Description: Coordinate and carry out administrative operations of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Headquarters, in line with providing overall assistance to the ISA Headquarters Staff. Assist in the daily operations and procedures of the ISA HQ office including communication management, database management, filing systems and other related day to day activities to ensure timely, complete and efficient workflow. Assist with monitoring, organizing, and translating documents for the ISA Scholarship Program. Assist with the media management of video and print materials of the ISA, as well as marketing efforts on social network systems.

5. Surfline editorial/photo internship

Applicable Fields: journalism, photography

Description: The Surfline editorial/photo internship is an opportunity to learn the inner workings of Surfline’s editorial department. Assist Surfline’s editorial team by building out stories in Surfline’s Content Management System, transcribing interviews, editing photos, posting videos and other projects.

6. Ripcurl video internship

Applicable Fields: Videography, film production, film editing.

Description: Assisting with production and editing tasks including filming, logging, digitizing, editing, motion graphics, studio lighting, and music licensing.

7. Kelly Slater Wave Company internship

Applicable Fields: business administration, management, operations, hospitality

Description: The company is seeking a well-rounded, motivated and quick to learn intern to support operational and business development goals. This role would support a wide variety of functions from administrative to complex tasks requiring both technical and creative skills. An understanding of surfing and hospitality industries are a plus. Intern should excel in all Office programs. Initial internship would be for a temporary trial period. This is not a paid internship but intern may qualify for a stipend for travel and food reimbursement. Depending on performance, internship may be extended or there is potential for employment as company grows.

8. Quiksilver human resources internship

Applicable Fields: business, human resources

Description: Interns will learn how a corporate Human Resources department functions. Interns will be exposed to various Human Resources roles such as recruitment, on-boarding, file management, employee benefits, involved in campus tours and reporting. Interns will gain an understanding of the importance of human relations in the operation while increasing their ability to work effectively with staff.

9. The La Jolla Group sales internship

Applicable fields: Sales, marketing, customer service

Description: La Jolla Group, Inc. is a world premier multi-brand apparel licensing company, with a portfolio of prominent brands including O’Neill Clothing USA, Metal Mulisha Clothing and FMF Clothing. We are currently seeking a hard working and motivated Customer Service/Sales Intern with a passion for providing exceptional customer service. An intern in this role will be trained to assist with the following responsibilities.Data-entry of customer orders, return authorizations, and special handling requests, reporting and auditing of customer orders, receiving and auditing O’Neill product sample lines, steaming, hanging, and organizing product sample lines, tracking product sample lines for customer and in-house photo shoots, creating at-once sales data sheets

10. O’Neill merchandising internship

Applicable Fields: Retail, apparel, merchandising

Description: The La Jolla Group is looking for an intern for the O’Neill Men’s Merchandising team. To be eligible for an internship you must currently be a student, and able to receive course credit. All La Jolla Group internships are unpaid for course credit only. The intern will help gathering data for analysis, help design build color pallete, work with merchant prepping for CAD reviews, update Merch guides using Illustrator, help merchandiser organize the room and folders for Proto reviews, costing audits (Make sure what is on spreadsheet matches the system), flip Costing in PLM, organizing the seasonal rolling racks, prepping the product line for studio shoot, help lay out the line for catalog shoot, audit salesman sample invoices in FC, verify catalog information matches PLM system
