According to Webster’s dictionary video games are games played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or other display screen.

In our society today video games have become a way of life for many people. I recently discovered that people are getting paid to play video games which I found very shocking. People have become so consumed by these games that many have of them have let these games take over their lives. They become addicted and emotionally attached to video games.

When I think about video games and the impact they have on children and adults in our society I can only think of negative impacts. Some of the most popular games as of right now when looking at the genre of violence are Call Of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. Call of Duty is all about killing people and advancing whereas Grand Theft Auto is a very disturbed racing game that involves killing people, running away from police, getting with prostitutes, and the list goes on.

The biggest issue I have is with Grand Theft Auto. The games does nothing but encourage not only violence but also derogatory remarks towards authorities and women. For men who play games such as this it is encouraging them to believe it is okay to treat women in this manner when really no woman wants to be treated like this no matter how desperate she is for attention. For women who play this game and others similiar to it, it is making them comfortble with being treated in this manner. The language that the game has prerecorded is disturbing to say the least. While it might be fun to play people should really look into the ethics of the game.

It is sad to see that people especially parents will fork out around $60 to buy such games for their kids. I know a few moms myself who are disgusted that their sons play games such as these but once the kid says but mom everytones doing, then they disregard how they felt toward the game.

I think that our society today is impacted through these games and that it will only get worse as time goes on and graphics improve and look even more real than now. Kids, especially young kids, should not be allowed to play games that are aimed at killing people or causing destruction.

The work that is put into creating a video game is amazing to say the least, but can we find a new way to create games that are not so violent that “gamers” would still want to play or has it gone so far as to where now a video game would not be able to sell unless there is violence?
