For too long, sustainability has been seen as an institutional responsibility, disengaging citizens from taking ownership. But the truth is, sustainable development is deeply personal, impacting our daily lives, communities, and the planet’s future. This realization contributed to the creation of Susinsight.

The idea for Susinsight was born in 2021 during a conversation between Tomi and me, Toro, about the powerful intersection of sustainability and media. As I shared my knowledge of the different sustainable processes and systems and Tomi’s daunting quest to use his skills to drive social value, our shared passion for addressing sustainability challenges was ignited. We realized that Africa lacked comprehensive and accessible information on sustainability, and we were determined to fill this gap. Our brainstorming sessions led us to explore various project titles before finally settling on Susinsight (Sustainability + Insight) as the perfect name for our platform.

According to the UN Coordinator for China, Siddharth Chatterjee, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improving millions of African lives hinges on raising public awareness. A UNDP report reveals that most African countries struggle to meet SDG targets due to a lack of understanding. Moreover, IRENA reports that only 2% of global renewable energy investment goes to Africa, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and action. These findings fueled our motivation to create a platform that educates, empowers, and drives positive change across Africa.

With a clear mission in mind, we transformed our idea into action. We conducted thorough research on existing platforms, uncovering a unique opportunity to provide in-depth analysis and actionable insights on African sustainability. Our initial articles set the stage, and in May 2023, we launched Susinsight, combining informative content with engaging spotlight features.

Over the past year, Susinsight has grown and evolved with top readers across Nigeria, the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Kenya, France, Germany, Ghana, and India. We’ve expanded our team to include four contributing writers, introduced new categories like Spotlights and Impact Stories, and maintained our commitment to providing focused expertise, holistic perspectives, and actionable insights. Our goal remains steadfast: to empower stakeholders and inspire meaningful change.

As we look to the future, we’re driven to shape the narrative of sustainable development in Africa. Part of our ambition is to become the premier resource for comprehensive analysis, insightful reports, and compelling narratives on this critical topic, informing and inspiring a sustainable future for all.

We’ll also be introducing new content categories, tools, and initiatives like a Founder’s Corner, more data-driven insights, special projects, and themes covering diverse trends in the world as they relate to sustainability in Africa while exploring video content to drive engagement and expand distribution. Recognizing storytelling’s power, we’ll add interactive elements like quizzes, polls, gamification elements, competitions, and rewards to foster deeper connections with our audience.

To support our mission and contributors, we’re currently exploring monetization strategies while ensuring free access to exclusive content for the first three months after registration, keeping our platform accessible and inclusive. At our core, we foster a community-driven approach to sustainable development. We believe real change is collective, and we strive to catalyze informed discussions among policymakers, business leaders, researchers, and citizens across Africa. We strive to make sustainable development accessible and captivating, translating complex ideas into engaging and relatable stories that inspire action and foster a deeper understanding of the issues that matter most.

As we celebrate this one-year milestone, we’re reminded of the incredible journey that brought us here and the immense potential that lies ahead. From our humble beginnings sparked by insightful conversations, we’ve grown into a dedicated platform driving positive change across Africa. We’re grateful to our readers and the team who have been with us every step of the way. Together, we’ll continue striving towards our mission of advancing sustainable development in Africa and beyond, one insightful article, one impactful story, and one engaged reader at a time.
