Mind the Gap
“What do we actually need?”
Welcome to the latest article in our SU Social series, where we take a look at the membership engagement strategies for students’ unions.
Each of part of the series have been de-constructed, carefully selected, and properly sequenced for easy understanding and usage so that you don’t have to sift through the thousands of articles & theories. And execute on strategies right away.
This week’s topic is in Gap Analysis
When meeting with organisations, i hear how we are hurting. All across the board, membership engagement is decreasing. As an organisation that uses collective bargaining to get the best for its members, it can definitely feel like a game of poker across the negotiating table. Or more like a game of optics, paired with a prayer that they would not call our bluff.
How many members would actually walk-out if we called for it?
What is our engagement gap? Do we know where we are, where we should be, and where we could be. Is it clearly defined?
This exercise should never be done by one person as it has to satisfy the organisations stakeholders. And please (for goodness sake) consult students too. They are there: student staff, masters students doing dissertations, or in-front of a screen somewhere (probably watching love island or something) with their messenger, instagram, or twitter open, in-front of their faces, for DM’s, likes, and swipes.
That’s right, I said swipe — whatever it takes.
Group think what’s stopping you from getting to point B. I’ve listed a few common ones so that you can get started.
