Welcome to my monthly overview of the Sustainability Calendar. The full year-long calendar is here.

Everything happening this month:

All month:

  • Veganuary (UK) – see also World Vegan Month and World Vegan Day, both in November
  • Big Energy Saving Winter (UK)
  • Walk Your Dog Month (international)

Wednesday, 5 January: National Bird Day (US) – see also World Migratory Bird Day in May and October

Wednesday, 5 January to Monday, 21 February: Big Schools’ Birdwatch (UK)

Sunday, 9 January: The Green Planet starts, new documentary from the BBC. New episodes every Sunday until 6 February.

Monday, 10 to Sunday, 16 January: Houseplant Week (UK) – see also National Indoor Plant Week in September

Monday, 17 to Friday, 21 January: Davos Forum

Monday, 17 January: Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US
Why is this here? Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday in the US where employees are encouraged to spend the day in service to others, hence “a day on, not a day off”.

Tuesday, 18 January:

Thursday, 20 January: Penguin Awareness Day (International)

Friday, 21 January: Squirrel Appreciation Day (international) and Red Squirrel Day (UK)

Wednesday, 26 January: World Environmental Education Day

Monday, 31 January: International Zebra Day

I need your help to make this the best resource it can be. If there is an event missing, let me know either in the comments or on social media.

Revision log:

12 January: list updated to include the launch of a TV documentary (the Green Planet) and a book release (Fresh Banana Leaves); updated cover image
13 January: list updated to include Martin Luther King Jr. Day
17 January: list updated to include the return of a TV wildlife show (WinterWatch)
