Sustainable Energy and The Workplace

Even with the destruction caused by climate change, job opportunities have arrived because of it. With new sources of energy slowing becoming more popular, jobs in new fields are created to meet these needs. Other occupations like urban planners will need to adapt to the changing world and plan accordingly as well as many other industries.

In 2017, job postings related to the renewable energy industry made up about 52% of the energy sector job postings in the UK. This is only one example but worldwide similar trends are following. One advantage is people who have already had experience in fields like oil or gas, have certain skills that make it easy an easy transition into the sustainable energy industry.

Companies already involved in sustainability have been more attractive to people because of the salaries they’re paying. Companies who value sustainable energy and climate change have shown they are not afraid to offer more money because it’s a field in need. I think this would make the workplace a better environment because I think people would feel they’re getting paid a fair salary for their expertise and feel good about their work. In 2016, people working in the sustainable sector in North America and Europe made an average salary of $87,000 and 12% earned $143,000 or more. This to me is evidence that the workplace is changing and new skills are desired to fill new jobs.

A few examples of these new jobs created include, Wind Turbine Technicians, Solar Panel Installers and Clean Car Engineers. These are only 3 of the many occupations that will prove to be more prominent in the future and in the world of changing energy.
