SUSTAINABLE TRAVELING
Urban and Suburban Sustainable Housing Rentals
Off-the-grid doesn’t have to be a cabin in the woods
Sometimes you want a cabin on the lake or in the woods far away from the hustle and bustle of life. Sometimes, however, you have to travel to a city for work, to visit family, or to attend an event. City travel doesn’t always have to mean a big hotel. You can find solar-powered, sustainable homes in cities and suburbs from companies like AirBnB and VRBO. These are just a few examples of the kinds of houses and apartments you can find throughout the United States.
All You Have to Do Is Look for What You Want
It can be tricky to search specific sites based on the amenities of the properties. I found all these by searching for “solar-powered housing rentals” on Google.
Southern California
A two-bedroom house in Long Beach is a great location for a Los Angeles beach vacation. This house is near some of the universities and close to a bus stop, and there’s an extensive bike path through Long Beach. If you have to drive, the house is near major freeways, has plenty of parking, and has a charger for an electric cars. Easy access to the freeways gets you to all the major attractions in the area.
San Diego is a popular spot for both business travel, vacations, and family visits. This studio apartment is minutes from the airport, military bases, downtown, and popular beaches:
Northern California
In Silicon Valley, the heart of everything plugged in, you can rent a solar-powered two-bedroom cottage. Stay in Berkeley at a solar-powered tiny house near a BART station for easy transportation, and that comes with a bicycle as part of the rental. There are some great bike paths in the area. Or rent a houseboat in Sausalito, just a few minutes from downtown San Francisco:
Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C., is another city that brings people to town for both business and vacations. Even in the middle of the city there is solar-powered lodging available.
This one-bedroom home near Union Market is perfect if you’re in town for business or to use as a base for exploring the area. It’s near bus lines and the Metro. The neighborhood is full of restaurants within walking distance.
Another one-bedroom apartment in Truxton Circle is also nicely located in the city with parks, grocery stores, and restaurants within walking distance. It’s not far from the Green and Yellow Metro lines and Howard University. It’s a great spot not just for work or vacation, but if you’re in town to visit a student at one of the nearby colleges.
Colorado
Colorado means hiking and ski vacations along with visiting family members or working. This four-bedroom house in Colorado Springs is minutes from the Air Force Academy and golf courses, and is a great location to explore Pike’s Peak and Denver from.
Need a Break from the City?
After your time in the city, book yourself a quiet, remote retreat to meditate, write a novel, or just breathe in some fresh air at FreeHouse, a source for sustainable housing in natural surroundings.
Travel for work, school, and other events doesn’t have to be unsustainable. Take your green habits with you on the road with some simple searches before you book your lodging. You may be surprised at the modern, charming places you can find.
I am not affiliated with any of these websites or properties, I found them all through online searches. At the time of publication they were all listed as being solar-powered. Be sure to read property listings carefully before booking.
