Germany is home to WKC (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie.), which is the oldest existing sword factory in the world. The company started in 1883 in Solingen, Germany when two sword companies merged. They were successful before the Great Depression, and controlled the patent for efficient manufacturing of blades. They suffered hardship after WWII, but were able to bounce back. In 2005 they acquired the assets of famous London sword company, Wilkinson Sword. Now WKC makes ceremonial swords for global customers such as West Point Military Academy in the USA.

Solingen, Germany is also referred to as “the City of Blades” due to its prowess in manufacturing swords, razors, knives, and scissors. It is also home to the famous kitchen knife company Wüsthof, which produces high quality culinary knives.

Germany exports 10.8 Million USD in swords per year, and while this is a small share of total exports, it is still a surprisingly large figure. This is due to efficient manufacturing, historical experience, and patent control.
