Last week, we visited Hamburg, Germany’s second biggest city with a population of nearly two million. Our time in Hamburg gave us insight into the technological aspect of sustainable development in Germany. On the morning of Friday, June 8th, we had the opportunity to visit Nordex, one of the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturers. On our tour we were able to explore the inside of a wind turbine, and discuss how maintenance and upkeep works. It was so interesting to see Nordex’s wind turbines at work in Hamburg’s harbor. Over the course of the weekend, we had two free days, which gave us the opportunity to further explore the city. We visited the Hamburger Kunsthalle, took a tour around the harbor, and tried the fish sandwiches that the city is known for. On Sunday evening, we had the opportunity to attend a concert at the famous Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Although the music was wonderful, it seemed that the hall itself was a controversial figure for the country. Our guide in Hamburg discussed with us that the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, similar to Stuttgart 21, had taken longer to build and cost much more than the public had expected. Furthermore, many locals were displeased with the exterior design of the building.
