Press Conference: Youth leaders galvanizing a new movement for change

WHAT: A youth-led press conference highlighting youth leaders from around the world who are spearheading groundbreaking campaigns and initiatives to take climate action where they live.

When: December 7, 2018 @10:30–11:00 am CET

Location: Press Conference Room Katowice (Zone F)

Speakers:

  • Phillip Brown, SustainUS Youth Delegation & Sunrise Movement (USA)
  • Gabriela Gonzales Malca, TierrActiva (Peru)
  • Joyce Tan, Dejusticia (Colombia)
  • Brendan Campbell, Canadian Youth Delegation (Cree/Canada)
  • Nevada Huaki-Foote, Te Ara Whatu (Aotearoa/New Zealand)

WHY: Young people disproportionately feel the burden of global warming but are often left out of decision-making, both here at COP and at home. The recent groundbreaking IPCC report is clear: we must transition off of fossil fuels to clean energy in the next 12 years if we are to avoid the collapse of civilization as we know it. Yet this urgency is not translating to more ambitious action at the international level. While the negotiations stall at COP24 and a safe and stable future seems out of reach, youth leaders are spearheading innovative and bold projects to pressure their governments to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
