I have led Silicon Valley Bank’s Frontier Tech practice for the past five years. During that time, I have been amazed by the ever-increasing rate of innovation and the technologies our clients have developed. While most of these activities are behind locked doors (or in garages), there are many exciting advancements in the sub-sectors we support: transportation, industrial robotics, consumer electronics, aerospace, infrastructure, digital health and interfaces.

These experiences and our client interactions shape our perspective on the future of technology. This is the main reason why we are choosing to focus SVB Inside Innovation on frontier technologies and the companies that are working hard to make these technologies a reality.

The past few months have been pretty interesting for a number of frontier tech sectors: We saw the Falcon Heavy launch by SpaceX, Boston Dynamics continues to mesmerize us with its futuristic robots and Magic Leap finally revealed its long-anticipated first product. I expect 2018 to be a big year for many nascent innovations, including 3D metal printing, VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) vehicles and quantum computing. My team and I look forward to covering these areas throughout the year.
