Data Visualization in the Newsroom — Here is what we have learned…

To sum up (for those who missed our first post ;): While there are already many other good tools out there to make charts for online media, many of theses are still quite complex and difficult to use for editors and social media managers with little “data experience”. This is why we had the idea to build a tool that anyone can use to quickly make beautiful charts without having prior knowledge.
When we set out to develop our tool, we did not just want to trust our intuition, but instead we were eager to learn what day-to-day work in a modern newsroom looks like and how our tool could help journalists and content creators improve their workflow. So we did our research and talked to more than a dozen digital news outlets and social media agencies in Germany to gain insights. Here are our main learnings:
- Online journalists today have to be »multi-taskers«: While the main job of journalists is still to tell engaging stories and to inform their readers, many are also taking on additional tasks, as technology evolves and 24/7 news output demands a higher volume of content creation. Especially in local media outlets with smaller teams this means that journalists often have to wear different hats at the same time and create output across multiple channels, i.e. online news articles, social media posts, video and print articles.
- Visual content gets the »clicks«: Online content more than ever competes for readers’ attention and most newsrooms report that articles or social media posts including engaging visual content (e.g. images, animated gifs or videos) receive higher click rates and greater reach than just plain text content. However, the possibilities to present data in an engaging visual form is often still surprisingly underdeveloped in newsrooms. This is because editors are usually not familiar with ways of producing visuals themselves and depend on graphic or video editors for support.
- There is a »technical divide« in newsrooms: While certain journalists are highly computer and technology-oriented folks, most are not technical experts and some even have difficulties adapting their daily routines to new technologies which are introduced in a top-down manner. After all, journalists need to concentrate on the core of their work — reporting — and should not deal with the intricacies of new and complicated software. This is why data visualization tools for journalists (as any other software really) should be as intuitive as possible and fun to use, to easily integrate into the actual daily workflow without requiring extra training.
- There is noooooo time: Being a journalist in a big newsroom is a stressful job. Breaking news often leave little time for in-depth experimentation with graphic or data visualization tools on a day-to-day basis. Once a story is planned and a graphic is envisioned, results need to be delivered fast. The average time to complete a simple graphic is usually short, ranging from a few minutes to a few hours at best.
Based on the above findings during our interviews with the journalists, we realized that our tool would have to inherit certain characteristics that are based on the actual needs of the daily workflows in today’s newsrooms. We realized that especially three requirements were essential for the development of such a tool:
Our tool should be very simple to use and anyone should be able to make a chart or engaging data graphic without prior technical knowledge and without getting frustrated by complex software. To make our tool more accessible, we decided to go for a conversational user interface, i.e. a personal chatbot assistant 🤖 that guides the user through the process of creating an engaging data visualization.
2. Usability across multiple channels:
Given the changing role of the online journalist today, we realized that it would make sense to create a tool, that can create interesting chart types for many different output channels. We want to enable the editor to create a chart only once and then use it not only for the online article (as image or interactive embed), but also share it directly in the optimal sizes on their social media platforms or use it in a video.
3. Beautiful charts fast:
We learned that tight time constraints in journalism are real. Therefore we wanted to build a tool, that delivers beautiful charts quickly and in a very easily understandable flow: From start to finish, the creation of a chart with our tool — including 1) choosing a chart type, 2) data input, 3) styling and 4) graphic output — should not take more than 3 – 4 minutes max.
Throughout or research, we have learned quite a bit about the daily work of online journalists today. Some of the assumptions we had at the beginning were challenged, others were supported. We think that the time we invested to talk to our partners was very helpful for us to understand, what it was, that we were actually going to build and that can be of actual use in the daily work of journalists. We are pretty confident that we are heading in the right direction, but are of course, thankful for any feedback and comments from you.
