Lettera di benvenuto alle matricole del Politecnico di Milano

Care ragazze e cari ragazzi,

benvenuti!

Oggi per voi è un giorno speciale. Oggi inizia una nuova avventura. Una di quelle che sarà un tassello fondamentale nella vostra vita.

Quello che già sapete è di essere iscritti ad una delle università più prestigiose e valide a livello italiano e internazionale, ma una qualunque classifica non è sufficiente.

Il Politecnico di Milano nasce nel 1863 dal sogno di alcune tra le personalità più illustri del tempo. Volevano dare una forma e una struttura al sapere, trasmetterlo e migliorarlo. Formare quegli uomini e quelle donne capaci di muoversi in questo mondo in così profonda e continua trasformazione. Da allora, i suoi studenti hanno preso un ruolo attivo nella società, a testa alta, grazie a quel titolo targato “Politecnico di Milano” che gli dà forza. La loro preparazione e qualità è quello che li ha distinti, caratteristiche che dipenderanno soprattutto da voi. Il Politecnico vi darà tanto nella misura in cui voi darete a lui. Vi sentirete amati solo se prima voi amerete lui. Non sottovalutatelo.

Vivete a pieno questo posto! Frequentate le lezioni, importantissimo, ma non fermatevi qui. Andate a convegni, incontri, presentazioni, partecipate a progetti di studio all’estero. Provate a conoscere il mondo per voi nuovo delle associazioni universitarie: ne esistono tantissime, ognuna con le sue peculiarità e tematiche di interesse. E perchè non fondarne voi una nuova? In più, informatevi sulla rappresentanza: esistono tre associazioni di rappresentanza studentesca, La Terna Sinistrorsa, Lista Aperta e Svoltastudenti, formate da studenti come voi che hanno deciso di fare qualcosa in più. Il loro operato è stato fondamentale negli anni passati, e continuerà ad esserlo. Siete intraprendenti e avete idee che ritenete possano migliorare la vita universitaria? Perchè non provare a partecipare direttamente anche voi? Contattateli! Seguite i loro canali social e rimanete costantemente informati su cosa succede in ateneo.

Qui incontrerete ragazzi provenienti da ogni parte d’Italia e del mondo, sappiate scambiare con loro opinioni e idee. Le persone di cui vi circonderete faranno in modo che questa diventi la vostra seconda casa, un luogo familiare, dove sarete felici di recarvi ogni giorno, nonostante le grandissime sfide che affronterete durante vostra carriera accademica.

E infine, non dimenticate che siete a Milano. Non dimenticate mai di formare la vostra persona parallelamente e in sinergia con lo studio. L’università, per essere un percorso pienamente formativo, avrà bisogno di essere qualcosa che va ben oltre l’orario settimanale. Fate sport e coltivate le vostre passioni. Che siate fuori sede o meno, date a questa città l’opportunità di essere amata. Passeggiate per le sue strade, è piena di soprese. Musica, arte, cultura, sport, servizi, eventi e vita notturna. Prendete il tempo di visitare una mostra, un museo o di fuggire un weekend fuori porta, l’aeroporto ad un passo dalla città vi farà sembrare estremamente vicine le mete europee. È tutto qui alla vostra portata, basta saperlo cercare.

Vi saluto con una citazione di una delle più importanti personalità italiane dello scorso secolo. “Agitatevi perché avremo bisogno di tutto il vostro entusiasmo. Organizzatevi perché avremo bisogno di tutta la vostra forza. Studiate perché avremo bisogno di tutta la vostra intelligenza” [Antonio Gramsci].

Dear boys and girls,

welcome!

Today is your special day. Today, a new adventure begins. One of those that can be considered a key point of your life.

What you already know is that you are enrolled in one of the most important and valuable universities in Italy and at the international level, but any kind of ranking cannot be enough.

Politecnico di Milano was born in 1863 by the dream of some of the most important people of that years. They wanted to give a well-defined structure to knowledge, in order to spread and improve it. To train those men and women able to work in this world always in deep and continuous transformation. Since that time, its students have an active role in the society, with heads held high, thanks to the degree of “Politecnico di Milano” which gives them a good advantage. The skills and quality of their competence are what that make them stand out, but this will be mostly up to you. The Politecnico will give you back as much as you give. You will feel loved only if you first will love it. Keep this in mind.

Live fully this place! Attend lectures, it is very important, but do not stop to this point. Go to conferences, meetings, presentations, take part in study projects abroad. Try to find out about the new world of university associations: there are many, each one with its characteristics and interests. And why not a new one? In addition, get in touch with the student representatives: there are three student associations, La Terna Sinistrorsa, Lista Aperta and Svoltastudenti, students like you who decided to do something more. Their work has been very important in last years, and it will be the same in future. Are you resourceful and have you ideas that you think can improve the university life? Why not trying to directly participate you too? Contact them! Follow their social channels and be constantly informed on what happens in the university.

Here, you will meet people coming from all over Italy and the world, know how to have an exchange of point of views and ideas with them. The people around you will make that this place become your second home, a friendly place, where you will be happy to go every day, despite the great challenges you will face during your academic career.

Last but not least, do not forget that you are in Milan. Never forget to train you as a person in parallel and in synergy with the study. The university, in order to be a fully educational place, must be something that goes beyond the weekly timetable. Do sports and take care of your passions. Whether you are away from home or not, give to this city the opportunity to be loved. Walking through its streets can be amazing. Music, art, culture, sports, services, events and night life. Take your time for an exhibition, a museum or a weekend away from the city, the airport is close to the city and it will make you feel the European destinations extremely close. Everything at hand, it just must be known where to look for.
