The act of kissing under a sprig of mistletoe is one of the oldest and least understood holiday traditions still in practice today.

When you stop to consider that you are actually kissing under a ball of parasitic plant matter, it may be one of the weirdest.

Mistletoe vs Holly:

Mistletoe is the common name for a number of parasitic plants in the Santalales order and is often confused with holly (or bat-wing if you are using its traditional name in witchcraft). Holly is the pointy-leafed evergreen most commonly associated with Yuletide and Christmas. Although both have been used dating back centuries as decorative plants around the holiday season, the use of mistletoe has significantly declined in recent decades due to a majority of people not being aware of the differences between the two plants.

To set the record straight: Mistletoe has smooth, oval leaves with white berries, and holly tends to have thick leaves with sharp points and clusters of red berries. Although both are considered evergreens, holly is a deciduous tree, shrub, or climber. A mistletoe is a parasite that attaches…
