For all those AR VR designers, developers and someone who wants to experience Augmented Reality

I am Manu Vikraman AR VR Designer and Evangelist, CEO & CDO — Swevens Immersive Studio. I have been fortunate to get hands-on with 40+ projects on AR VR in last 2.5 years from Concept Design to Delivery for companies like IKEA, Saint Gobain, Tafe, Siemens, Daimler etc. In that journey, I got exposed to almost all cutting edge devices available in the market and able to research and design solutions on those, some hardware like Oculus DK2, Lenovo Google Tango & Structure Sensor, Leapmotion, HoloLens 1, HTC Vive, Google Daydream, Gear VR and so on.

Will write someday all about how my 10+ years of career across the Design Industry and how it lead me to become an AR VR Designer.

Enough about myself, lets get right into our topic :)

Whenever I visit any conferences, colleges, meetups or casually having a conversation with enthusiasts over Linkedin, one common question raised by people is will my (his/her) phone support AR Core. My simple answer is always to search the keyword AR core supported devices, and you will get the info. If it is a flagship phone, I can tell but other phones it is difficult as Google keeps on updating supported devices list very frequently and at the same time the no of phones getting launched by different manufacturers is enormous compared to before.

On the same breath, some of them ask me to recommend them an entry-level smartphone they can buy and start exploring AR. I did some research and found no posts or topics that can help me narrow down entry level AR core supported phones in the market, Indian Market.

When it comes to Apple AR kit, supported devices start from iPhones 5 SE and above. It’s easily trackable as Apple got only a few models to choose from its family.

So this is my small effort to give some clarity on that.

Disclaimer: This is not the complete list of supported devices, only selected few that comes under the 20k range; also the opinions expressed here are solely mine.

The cheapest brand new phones available in the market which support AR core are Moto G6 -10,290.00 & Nokia 6.1 (2018) -10,950.00

These entry level will be more than enough for developers or designers to explore the Augmented reality medium, and the bonus will be they can have Vuforia, and Google Cardboard VR apps developed on the same.

Other options

Alternate option rather than buying a brand new phone is looking for used phones if one able to get some good deals on phones like

OnePlus 3

One Plus 5

iPhone SE

Thanks for the read.

Do you know other mobile phones to recommend? Leave a comment!
