There’s constant chatter about whether or not online dating is the way to go when it comes to finding long-lasting romance in 2018. We are becoming so socialized in our digital devices that if something isn’t mobile, it is not gaining a majority of our attention. This isn’t to say that we need to be more engaged in our phones; however, when it comes to dating, if we are already on our phones anyway, why not use the applications we use most to find potential partners?

If you are weary of apps like Tinder or Match.com, try using Twitter, Instagram, and Meetup to swipe right on potential dates.

My friends and I have encountered many potential partners on Twitter and Instagram. Some DM’s have turned into dates. My co-worker and her friends, a group of 60 year old women told me how they go to Meetups for Singles in their Sixties, simply because “no one wants to die alone.” Online dating takes form in many different ways. Here are three insider tips on how to use your daily social media accounts to possibly find love:

On Instagram, use the “Places” tab to find nearby cuties or popular social spots to hang out.

This is a great way to find local people you may be interested in and connect with them immediately. On an application like Instagram, it’s very normal to gain followers that you don’t know. If you see someone you’re interested in that frequently visits your favorite bar on U St., connect with them! Follow them and see if they follow you back. Don’t be afraid to exchange a few likes and comments, as well.

On Twitter, check out hashtags and engage in conversation.

Hashtags are great conversation starters. Use Twitter as a way to start a conversation. One of my bestfriends constantly utilizes Twitter to meet new guys and go on dates. A simple reply to someone’s tweet is how a conversation gets started. Also, be sure to do your research. Twitter is its own search engine. Read through someone’s tweets and media to see what are their interests, what are their thoughts, if they are single, etc. This platform is a great way to see exactly what a person is thinking.

Go to a Meetup in your city!

If you haven’t used meetup.com, I suggest you try! It’s a platform used to find nearby events and groups that share similar interests. Whether it is going to brunch or playing pick-up soccer games, you can meet other people in your area. When you engage with sites created for dating, it’s easy to feel like you’re forcing yourself to find a relationship. As a digital platform that strives to have people use less technology and more in person communication, Meetup connects people organically. You’re increasing your chances of meeting someone you genuinely like and not forcing a romantic engagement.
