John’s Church — The Mousse T and Cassius Remixes
Back in April, German producer Oliver Dollar released his album ‘Another Day Another Dollar’ to wide acclaim. It was an eclectic album featuring a broad range of sub genres which were all great in themselves but two tracks stood out for me. These being the Mississippi inspired ‘Delta’ and the gospel infusion of ‘John’s Church’.
Roll around to July of 2019 and original collaborator Nils Ohrmann & Dollar have got a team of remixers on board that will leave House Heads salivating. Released on Luke Solomon’s and Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, the label have engaged the services of Mousse T and Cassius to lift the tune to another level.
In no particular order other than that’s how they are listed, I will go through the Mousse T ‘Disco Shizzle Remix’ first. Dollar hardly needs to have his work embellished but the inclusion of arguably Germany’s finest uplifting House producer on this release is a stroke of genius. He has slowed the beat down somewhat and applied a thick dollop of persuasive bass. This just adds to the tone of the original and drags you out of your chair. It cannot be understated how funky this remix is and for my money it is a brilliant repurposing of the original.
If that wasn’t enough along comes a re-rub by iconic French Producers Cassius via the ‘Cassius XXL Remix’. As many will have realised, Phillipe Zdar (one half of Cassius) sadly passed away recently but his memory will always live on in his music. It is hoped that he and Boom Bass worked on this track because it really shows that depth and space which Cassius have been consistently famous for. This therefore is a fitting tribute to their work. It retains much of that Gospel vibe but has an electronica deep tech infusion. For those of you that want that grinding, rounded bassline, this is the version for you.
If I was to select a personal favourite and put sentimentality aside, I would plump for Mousse T but it is a very close-run thing. The Cassius mix would appeal to that very ‘now’ tech crowd but the Disco Shizzle really gets its funk on.
Whatever your feelings, get it in your crate 😊
