The Reel People label and production team have been going for nearly two decades and last year they released an incredibly funky 12 track album of covers called ‘Retroflection’. The line up was blessed with an array of guest vocalists such as Mica Paris, Omar, Angie Stone, Tony Momrelle and Anthony David.

The legendary vocalists gave the album a unique feel as tracks like ‘Always There’ were given a blistering re-rub by Oli Lazarus. While the Yarbrough & People track ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ also became a firm favourite with those of a funky mind. It was so hard to pick a favourite from the 12 tracks with everything being so silky smooth and then the Reel People label outdid themselves by releasing ‘Retroflection Remixed’.

The whole album reads like a who’s who of some of the greatest producers of our time and upgrades the whole album from RnB/Soulful classics to more a dancefloor friendly vibe. Mousse T, Art of Tones, DJ Spinna, Osunlade, Sebb Junior and Terry Hunter all make an appearance on an album that is well worth the purchase price; even if you bought the original set of tracks.

One of the stand-outs for me though, as with the original album, is ‘Always There’ remixed by Scott Diaz. It does everything right with a perfect fusion of bassline grooves and a drop that just showcases the vocal in all its glory. Angie Stone’s vocal is the star here and Diaz treats it to a jazz/funk remix that is money in the back.

Art of Tones caressed ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ with their own funky grooves and Terry Hunter applies his soulful pedigree to Buttercup and Tony Momrelle’s ridiculously sublime vocals. Mousse T is also in fine form with ‘I Need Your Lovin’ but to be fair it is hard to pick out what makes this album so great as it would be like picking out a favourite child.

Reel People have yet again provided a perfect album for those that love their music soulful and funky. The way re-rubs should be…
