Voodoo Ray - Stacy Kidd feat. Ron Carroll
Voodoo Ray was not a producer or a DJ but first and foremost a dancer and promoter who arguably did as much for the New York House scene as anyone else. He was an immersive part of the Big Apple’s culture who was universally mourned when he passed unexpectedly.
It is therefore fitting that two of Chicago’s most prolific artists have released a tribute to the great man in a track that is both uplifting and spiritually rewarding.
Stacy Kidd has always been noted for producing beautifully-crafted tracks that have stood up to dance floor scrutiny and in a year which has seen some outstanding releases; this is right up there. The organ and guitar virtuosity shown on this track is a joy to behold and the fact it celebrates a legacy that loved this music is a fitting compliment. It would have been completely appropriate if this had been dropped at Voodoo Ray and Tony Touch’s famed ‘Funkbox’ and you can imagine the audience getting down as the track really allows you to stretch the legs.
With a vocal from Ron Carroll himself preaching to the anointed this is a very special release indeed. It bounces with toe tapping, gospel inspirations and is peppered with some George Benson type licks and rhythm guitar. If you like the current crop of Jack inspired tunes this is definitely for you.
The release comes with three mixes; main, instrumental and acapella. The quality of the musicianship on this track mean that the instrumental, ably supported by the keyboard skills of Shawn H, stands on its own.
If you want to chop up some preacher man vocals, Ron Carroll’s voice is front and centre and will allow DJs to endlessly sample and cut this to their hearts content.
It is rare that a tribute accurately reflects the legacy of the person that they are celebrating. However, this House 4 Life release certainly hits the mark embraced with the emotional and musical integrity that Voodoo Ray so richly deserves.
Right Proper. Preach!! 😊
