Z records delivers some more quality music

There are many superlatives written about Dave Lee and if you have been living in a dark corner of this world minus the warm hug of funky, soulful music, you may not have a heard of him. But for those that have listened or watched his alter ego Joey Negro play with or without his Sunburst Band, the quality and legacy of his work is unquestioned.

His label Z records, which was founded in 1991 primarily as a vehicle for his own work, has matured into a label that defines that rare groove, disco and funk phenomenon which has rightly returned to the spotlight in recent years. With this release ‘Put Some Disco In The House’, Z records have redefined the boundaries of the genre and released an album of sumptuous, groove-inspired bliss.

From the very first track that has the full disco orchestra caressing your neck with the Philly sound, this album delivers on every front. The artists that are featured here becomes an endless cavalcade of quality references that draw on every reserve that Z records can apply.

This is much more than pure disco house. The rendition by Fonda Rae’s ‘Over Like a Fat Rat’ featured on this collection is brilliance personified. The appearance of Gwen Guthrie cannot go unnoticed and the inclusion of a Directors Cut version of ‘The Secret Life of Us’ is just a further stamp of approval (if any were needed) that this release sits head and shoulders above the litany of unimaginative compilations that litter the marketplace.

In this collection there are 25 ‘must-haves’ which will bring pleasure to all and sundry including the çhin-strokers’ who regard themselves as the gatekeepers of this well-travelled genre. Listen to the journey that Z Records have mapped out for you and get lost in their story. This is a stand-out release.

Jay-B Rating: Right Proper 😊
