Existing together

I work on a remote team. Most of the team lives pretty nearby, but with the kind of work we do it’s more hassle than help to get together and hold regular office hours all the time. As a result, we all work from home most of the time and we get together pretty regularly for some “team time”.

One of the challenges we face is that—while working from home we can definitely contact each other easily—we’ve lost a certain sense of togetherness. In a shared physical room we just exist together. We overhear stuff, we smell each other’s lunches, and we experience the room’s energy together. This leads us to do things like taking coffee breaks together, getting distracted together, and just generally building relationships. This sense of togetherness begins to dwindle when we’re not sharing that environment.

Does this sound familiar? A recent Gallup poll shows that the increase in working remotely is continuing. If you’re not working remotely yet, there’s a growing chance you will be in the future.

It stands to reason that if there’s a problem on our team there’s probably an opportunity for lots of teams. We’ve recognized the need to be constantly connected, and we felt like the tooling just wasn’t cutting it. A morning Zoom meeting accomplishes our formal meetings very well, but we wanted something designed specifically for existing together all day.

So we created Swivel.

Swivel is an application designed just for keeping people together all day. In several ways it’s different from other online meeting applications:

  • You can reach people effortlessly, just by speaking
  • You can overhear what’s generally going on at work
  • You can get an at-a-glance view of where people are in relation to you (including how well they hear you)

There are a few other ways that Swivel is different (including some state-of-the-art performance features), but you’ll just have to try it out for yourself. It’s in open beta right now, so get your team to try it out while it’s free!

Try Swivel, and let us know what you think!
