I used to be a proud pragmatic, and discarded a lot of life advice as made up junk. One ear in, other ear out, I knew better.

In my early corporate days, I was especially allergic to inner-child advice, and “do what you could talk about for hours for free”.

Surely passion is not how you make money. And if you try it, the mundane of it will poison it for you.

Until one day my mum found some “books” I wrote between age 8 and 12. Seeing them, I also remembered always scribbling in my journal.

So I guess I’m making money exactly from what I used to do as a kid.

I couldn’t have been proven more wrong.

Do what you were good at as a kid

And not only that:

Find the things that made you weird as a kid. They make you great today. Take that weirdness and amplify it. The middle of the road is no place to be.

It turns out I was writing at 8, then spent 28 years distracted by studying, and clubbing, and working corporate jobs. At 38 I’m back to writing fully, earning an income from it. And feeling…
