You saw the Spielberg A.I. as a kid and thought “Woah, that’s cool, but pretty far in the future”. You say “Hey Google, Hey Alexa, Hey Siri” and think “oh wait, you’re kind of like Jarvis, but not nearly as cool”. You think “Oh s***, is A.I. a thing now? Are we all going to die? How much should I really worry about this?” Read on to find out.

1. There are a couple of types of A.I. and knowing the difference makes all the difference

There is Artificial SuperIntelligence and Artificial Intelligence. Most of what we think about in regards to the end of the word relates to ASI. However, Google, Siria & Alexa are just good ol’ fashioned A.I. In fact, a recent survey of experts currently don’t anticipate we will reach that milestone until the year 2060.

2. The real danger of A.I. right now is actual humans, not machines

From health care, to bank loans, to even hiring at tech companies, many have stumbled in the excitement to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence and how it can help look back in time with datasets and use previous examples to predict future actions. The problem is that these datasets are a record of many (many) human decisions, and humans are fallible. Humans are biased (whether they know it or not). Thus, the data is biased. Thus, their recommendations and predictions are full of human bias.

3. The time to act is now

Legislators are for once, ahead of this one in conversation with the Algorithmic Accountability Act. You don’t need to be a data scientist to understand the implication & impact of A.I. on us all. Make sure it passes.
