Leadership is very different than power. I have said this over and over again, but turn on the news and you will see stories of people who confuse these two things. Even churches struggle with dictator-like pastors exerting power over everyone and dominating to get their way.

I want to dive into the personality of bad leaders to see what makes them tick and how we can avoid being like them. Most bad leaders do not know they are bad, so this list is intended as a mirror of sorts. If you see yourself on this list, don’t despair. You can get better. You can change.

Here are four personality traits of bad leaders. Many of these are traits that bad leaders think make them good leaders, to their detriment.

Prideful

First up is pride. Bad leaders are prideful. They think too highly of themselves. They believe themselves to be the only one who can lead and get things done. This pride makes them believe they are always right. This leads to an “ends justify the means” mindset that uses bad means to get things.
