I was in a cafe a few years ago reading a book and taking down some notes. It’s one of those activities I frequently do — get away from the house or office, read a book, and just enjoy my coffee.
After a while, I glanced up and saw that there were a bunch of people who weren’t there before. I put my book down, sipped my coffee, and started to consider my ability to concentrate—despite plenty of distractions.
Nearby, there was a group of friends catching up — some of them shrieked from time to time. Others were busy reading. At the corner of the cafe sat a married couple, chatting while their child devoured a huge piece of chocolate cake.
I didn’t get distracted when these people came in nor when they make loud noises nor get sidetracked—and started to wonder why.
Looking back, I’ve noticed this ability to focus wasn’t always present. There are times when I can’t even stay put for longer than two minutes without switching tasks.
