My first real job was a Call Center Rep. The business was just getting its feet wet. So I was a Call Center Rep in name only. My boss at the time was a bit of a hard-ass. But he made sure we were involved with all aspects of the business growth. One day we would do product testing. Another, we were on a marketing campaign, sales or fulfillment. More importantly, my boss made sure we weren’t just taking up space. Our feedback was important. He challenged us and trusted us.

We felt important.

Like we were contributing to the greater good.

And that feeling of importance made us work beyond our job scope.

Leaders can find great power, influence, and success in making their team members feel important. Over 79% of employees who leave jobs, leave their managers. And not feeling wanted or important is a big part of that percentage. It’s not an easy skill, as it needs a high degree of selflessness, patience, and follow-through. For a long period, you must do things expecting nothing in return. But when the time is invested, your team will run through a brick wall for you. If you’re not sure where to start, follow through with these 7 practices.
