7 Things I Learned Growing My Newsletter to 2987 Subscribers

Platforms change. Emails don’t. Your follower’s email address is their most permanent online identity.

In contrast to gaining social media followers, building an email list requires a long-term strategy.

When I set up my newsletter in May 2020, I had zero subscribers and no strategy. My value proposition was unclear, and I didn’t expect my newsletter to grow at all. Fourteen months later, I’m at almost 3000 subscribers.

Growing your newsletter is easier than you might think. Here are seven things I learned that will help you grow your subscriber base.

1) Use Data to Niche Down

In the beginning, I didn’t know what to write about. My call-to-action was a fluffy “Want to connect? Subscribe here.”

I didn’t have a target audience, and I didn’t know how to deliver value.

But once I read Nicolas Cole’s book on writing online, I realized what I had to look out for.

Your first six months of writing online are all about finding your niche. Write your article about whatever sparks your interest. In the process, you’ll discover the intersection between what you love to write…
