As part of my “real” life — you know, the one we live as part of a community and which has little, if anything, to do with bits and bytes — I have chaired a Community Planning Group. This is a group of volunteers who help the local authorities review development plans for land in the community. We have a “General Plan” comprised of “Community Plans” and specific projects are supposed to be put together in a way which is consistent with both.

When we listen to proposals these days and people talk about traffic we keep hearing about how AI and autonomous vehicles are supposed to transform traffic “in the near future.” (If I was paid even a small amount for every time an idea was sold to me based on something that was coming “in the near future” I would be quite comfortable.)

In this particular case, we are told we can leave the driving to AI — that we will not have to worry about it. My beef with this is there are some things which we simply should have to worry about. That three to four thousand pounds of steel moving at as little as 25 mph has the kinetic energy to kill an average human being is one such thing.

Somewhere along the way in this discussion of AI and driving someone needs to ask whether the risks…
