The Marines view leadership like religions view God. It is everything. It is revered. It is sacred. From my time in Boot Camp to joint exercises with foreign military forces, all training revolved around leadership development. Why? Because the quality of leadership in any organization has a direct proportional relationship to that organization’s success and Marines see success as the only option. Marines know that leadership in the ranks, from Private to General, is critical to effectively accomplish any mission. Anyone can develop these leadership skills and apply them to being a better leader in work and in life.

Effective leadership can make people want to follow you without fear or force.

The first objective of all Marine Corps Leadership training Mission Accomplishment and second, Troop Welfare, in that order. In other words, get the job done no matter what and take care of your people while doing it.

These traits and principles became part of me and followed me through my enlistment from Boot Camp to the War in Iraq and beyond, to leading at work…
