Being in between things is the pits. There’s a reason it’s called limbo.

Maybe you got laid off and are waiting for the next job to come along. Or you’re renting and are desperate to buy a house and plant some roots (ehem, me). Or, perhaps, you’re waiting until you save up enough money to take a year-long hiatus you have been planning for years.

Whatever it is, you’re waiting.

My husband and I are twiddling our thumbs until we save up enough for a down payment on a house. It takes patience that we don’t always have. However, after I quit my full-time job last year to focus on writing, I developed several coping mechanisms to deal with limbo. It’s not fun, but you don’t have to fall apart.

Here’s how to survive the space in between things.

Build good things into your week, every week

Even if you’re in limbo, that doesn’t mean there aren’t positives you could profit from in your current situation.

For example, if you got laid off from your job, make a list of fun things you could never do when you worked 9–5. Museum visits, walks around…
