It’s only been a bit over a decade since the first iPhone was launched, but mobile devices have already had a massive impact as in the following cases.

  • Disrupted entire industries leading to companies worth billions of dollars such as Uber and its remaking of transportation.
  • Played a key role in coordinating and sharing images and videos in political movements such as the Iranian Green Revolution.
  • Shaping the growth and structure of entire societies, such as in China, India, or Africa where less developed areas bypass the normal development of the wired internet in favor of jumping directly to data transmission through cell towers.

The exponential growth in smartphones has been complemented by even more impressive growth in wearables such as smartwatches.

As computing technology gets more powerful, cheaper, and smaller, we can expect wearables to become even more ubiquitous in our daily lives and fade away so that they’re not even noticeable anymore. However, they will play an even larger part of our lives.
