To what extent are we experiencing a “Retail Apocalypse”?

At some point in the past couple years the phrase “Retail Apocalypse” was coined. The implication is that for brick-and-mortar retailers it’s the end of the world. As of 2018 more than 12,000 brick-and-mortar stores have closed since the 2008 recession, and more than 5,000 more retail outlets will be shuttered this year as well.
