Creating your Personal Product Philosophy

A guide for defining your approach to Product Management

At a recent catch-up with a group of colleagues, we were discussing what we brought to our Product Management role. Because of the diversity of companies and products we work on, there is a considerable variation in how different people approach Product Management. Think about other Product Managers you work with and have worked with. While there are many different types, there will be certain aspects about each individual that are consistent. This is their Product Philosophy.

The Personal Product Philosophy is the attitude and principles that guide how you approach Product Management. They remain valid regardless of the company, situation, or team you’re in. A Personal Product Philosophy is essential because it codifies your approach to Product Management and directs the action you take.

Why a Personal Product Philosophy is important

It is important to note that you will already have Product Values and operate within them daily. These principles are what make you unique as a Product Manager and encompass the hard and soft skills you bring to a role.
