At some point in my life, someone decided the world needed Crocs. People bought them, then they didn’t. Now, the rubbery clog is popular again.

During its first wave of popularity in the late 00’s and early 10’s, the shoe was considered incredibly ugly. Some people proudly wore the shoe as an accent piece, as the shoe was available in bold colors. Others claimed they owned the shoe for its comfort.

Somewhere along the line, bold colors and comfort became less important, so brand declined. Now it’s rebounding. Many people don’t understand the appeal, but its second wave of popularity is instilling fear into Crocs haters. The shoe is back, and Crocs may be here to stay.

The Original Rise of Crocs

In the early days, Crocs were designed for boating. They’re water resistant, easy to slide on, and made from to encourage comfort. Its pattented material Croslite is lightweight and designed to spread impact across the foot, while not absorbing water or sweat, making it bacteria resistant. With this in mind, it’s easy to see why people like nurses or chefs might like the shoe for practical purposes.

All of this is good and well, but fashion knows no boundries. A few years after its inception, Crocs became… fashionable?
