Product management = facilitating great decisions

Have you ever thought about how decisions are getting made in your work? If I had to bet, it probably looks something like this… An issue is brought up in a meeting, a handful of people weigh in and at some point, the decision is declared made and you move on.

After the meeting, the impact of the decision becomes clear. Some people grumble about it to each other on the side, others are downright pissed but keep it to themselves (other than their external grumpy demeanor), one or two are happy. And the results relative to the decision? Likely hit or miss. Sound familiar?

I mostly write for product managers. And there are a lot of pithy, one line definitions about what product management “is”. You know… “CEO of the feature” and “conductor of the orchestra” and my personal favorite “every line of code written has the highest customer impact possible”.

One of my lead PMs at Apple came up with this one: “product managers help the team make great decisions”. And if you are a PM, I suspect that immediately resonates with you.

But most people need to make decisions in their work life so feel free to read on even if you aren’t a PM 😘.

For the love of Schein
