Did You Miss the Train?

A metaphor for choosing the right path

“If a train doesn’t stop at your station, then it’s not your train.” — Marianne Williamson

Zig Ziglar opens his book See You at the Top with a story about a guy who missed the 2:20 to Boston.

Why did he miss the train anyway?

Because he was distracted by a fortune-telling scale. If you’ve never seen one, you stand on the platform, drop in a coin, and out comes a slip with your weight and your fortune.

The passing train is a metaphor. It’s how you feel when opportunity passes you by. You feel left behind, forgotten, and can drift into the mindset that all hope is gone.

There’s more to this than meets your heart’s eye

The train represents opportunities of all kinds. Many trains will come into view in your life. The question you should ask yourself above all others is, “Is this the right train for me?”

There’s no point taking a train to Pasadena when you want to go to Manhattan. The seats might be comfortable, the meals gourmet quality, and the person in the seat next to you might become your best friend. But if you’re going the wrong direction, you’ll just be happy further…
