Do These 3 Things Before Setting Your Goals, Or You Won’t Succeed

As the year starts to wind down and holidays are among us… NOW is the time we should start preparing to make next year, 2018, the best year of our lives…

The new year allows us to look ahead with optimism and excitement…

It’s why so many of us set New Year’s resolutions.

It’s why the gyms are filled up all around the world, it’s why people are in better moods because they’re optimistic about a bigger future…

But sadly and typically by February 15th…

we are all back in the same hypnotic daily rhythm of the prior year…

I’m surely not trying to be negative… in fact, the complete opposite… I think the new year is the perfect time to set goals and create a vision for a more prosperous and abundant future…

So what I hope to do is give you 3 simple techniques that will transform your goal setting from New Year’s resolutions that don’t last… into a crystal clear vision and path that you will accomplish in the year to come…

Most people wait till January 1 to start thinking about the resolutions they’d like to make… So I encourage you to be ahead of the game and start the process now so when the clock ticks midnight on January 1 you come out of the gate strong.

With that said, here are the 3 steps:

1. Remove Any Sense of Past Regret

I’m not sure if our brains are designed this way or society has pushed us in this direction… But we can tend to look back on the previous year with regret.

We look at the missed opportunities, what we’ve done wrong and why we’re NOT living the life that we’ve always dreamed of..

Though sometimes it is good to be disturbed by inaction…

In most cases that type of thinking doesn’t serve us… We think about what we missed out on and subconsciously we are anchoring in those same feelings for the year to come.

Here’s a better way to look at your previous year…

There are so many things that you accomplished and overcame that you didn’t give yourself credit for…

So why not turn your past 12 months into a positive focus and only extract those things that you learned from, that you grew from and that you accomplished…

Carry forward into the next year the feeling of getting more things done than you thought possible and learning more than you realized!

Even if it was one of the worst years of your life…

There are absolutely experiences that you can build upon if you look at them as foundational experiences for growth…

Your rock bottom can become a solid foundation for you to build upon in 2018

So take the time now and make a list of all the good that happened in 2017…

List all the things you learned from, that you grew from and even list some of the mistakes that you got out of the way. Frame those things that didn’t work out as expected as a learning experience that you grew from… rather than as failures…

When you approach your previous year like this… you will carry forward the momentum to help craft 2018 into the year you desire

2. Spend A Few Moments Prioritizing Your Top Goals

One of the least talked about yet most important part of setting a goal or an expectation that actually comes to life is prioritizing and being productive to make it happen…

If you don’t change any habits and you don’t find the time to actually accomplish what it is you desire…

then 2018 will just be a mirror image of the year prior…

So in today’s crazy busy world how do we find the time? How do we become as productive as possible?

Well, take the time today and make a “not to do” list…

There are things that you do every day, every week, and every month…

  • They don’t serve you
  • they don’t serve God
  • they don’t serve your bigger future
  • they don’t serve your family
  • and they don’t serve you making more money and living a more abundant life…

Does your environment drain or improve your energy?

Yet we do many of these things out of habit or they are things that were handed down to us by prior generations…

This is the perfect time of year to reflect back on the actions you take on a daily basis that don’t propel you toward your desired goals…

So if you want 2018 to be better than you can possibly imagine, there are 2 steps you need to do:

Step 1: Take the time and list the things that you know you shouldn’t be doing…

Step 2: Then decide if you should just stop doing them, delegate them to someone else, or in today’s tech world, see if you can automate them.

Taking the time to do this exercise will open up time in your life to focus on your goals, your desires and your dreams for this year and many years to come…

3. Take A Few Moments To Attach Your Deepest Emotions To It (this creates insane motivation)

I believe one of the biggest things that is missing from our New Year’s resolutions (our goals for the upcoming year) is attaching your heart to it…

I would bet in the New Year’s resolution category some of the top things said by most people around the world are…

1. Getting in better shape

2. Losing weight

3. Making more money

4. Eating healthier

5. Finally starting that new business

6. Finally stop procrastinating on starting the side business

7. Spending more time with your family

These and many more resolutions are fantastic and wonderful goals to set…

But in my experience just saying them and just thinking about that isn’t enough to make them a reality and become a part of your life…

To make your desires become your reality you must dig deep into your heart and find an emotion you can connect to the outcome that you crave…

If you want to lose weight and say you simply want to look better… that maybe true, but is that enough to keep you at the gym every day…

If you want to make that a reality, you need to attach your heart to that goal…

A powerful emotion to it…

Such as wanting to be an example for your children, wanting to set an example for those around you, or wanting to live longer so you can enjoy your family and friends while you’re on this planet…

When you attach it to your heart it becomes more than just a goal… it becomes an emotion…

a purpose…

something that you’ll be willing to put in the hard work to get.

Saying you want to make more money to get away from the crazy boss that drives you mad could absolutely be true…

But you’ve probably been saying that for years…

It’s time to create a deeper emotion and attach it to that goal!

Maybe you want to finally be a better dad or mom to spend more time with your spouse so you have a connection deeper than the ones your parents had…

Maybe you want to make more money to retire your parents or put away money in your own retirement so you can enjoy your grandchildren someday…

I’m not sure what other emotions you can attach to your goals but you’ll surely know if you dig a little deeper…

Spend the time right now after writing your goals to dig deep within your heart and find the true reason and emotion you can attach to each resolution or goal…

When you attach a feeling to a goal you give an exponential chance of becoming your reality…

As you can see I barely even talked about the goals you were setting because you already know what they are going to be…

But setting goals and attaching these three steps will give you the unfair advantage to make your dreams and your goals a reality… not just a simple resolution that fades by mid February…

Conclusion

As we head in to 2018 and you want this new year to be better than you can possibly imagine, there are 3 steps you need to do to:

1. Kill Regret Fast

2. Prioritize & Productivity

3. Attach Your Heart To It

Do this and this could finally be the year that you take your life to that next level…
