Don’t ask for help

I was assigned with a difficult task at my first real¹ programming job — I had absolutely no idea how to approach it.

I decided to reach out to my team members to get some guidance towards the solution. None could help me, but one. He said:

“Listen, no one knows what we should do here. No one is going to help you. Don’t ask for help. Figure it out.”

I figured it out².

Notes

¹ I’ve actually been paid for writing software before through selling Shareware software and working remotely as a (ninja-turtle-)teenage-developer.

² Is there a lesson to be learned here? Ask for help, but get better at spotting when you’ll have to figure it out on your own. Things tend to flow better from that point on.
