If you’re reading this post right now there’s a good chance you‘re a business owner with a business Facebook page, unless you’re in the cave construction business that only targets Cavemen 🗿

Maybe you fell into the temptation of promoting your Facebook page in the past, I get it! That is a sexy looking blue button picture of the Boost Post button

I’m Sexy and I know it

So, you clicked the “Boost Post” button to promote your post taking the leap of faith, crossed fingers and waited for results to come… The way you thought it will go makes absolute sense, but the reality is that that friendly blue button is a mediocre tool that leads to inefficient use of your marketing dollars.

“The catch” of boosting is the simplicity of it. You can do it right from your page without going to facebook manager and setting where things start getting a bit more complex if you aren’t too familiar with it.

But, unless you’re a company similar size to Coca Cola that measures a campaign success based on the number of eyeballs 👀 looking to its ad regardless of sales, boosting a Facebook post to get more likes is pretty much like paying someone to tell us how beautiful and shiny we look to boost our ego. Not much we can do with it but feeling good because we are ‘investing’ in the business. Probably, that is the reason you and I have tried it a couple of times in the past but aren’t doing it any longer… am I wrong?

You can skip reading this part and go straight into the takeaways down the bottom of the article, however, I feel in the need to give you a little bit of background on what isn’t working to you to then understand what would work better for you instead of keeping wasting money on traditional advertisement.

Small Business Marketing has changed since Facebook became part of the advertisement scene. Is not a secret for anyone that the largest social media platform in the world is an unbelievable tool to attract more customers. Otherwise, 80 Million 🤯businesses wouldn’t be using it at all if it wasn’t bringing more paying customers.

Let’s get it right here! The bottom line could not be that Facebook Advertisement doesn’t work because your niche isn’t on facebook. In the end, other companies (not to say your competitors) were performing way better with it than yourself. So, Facebook DOES work but we need to know how to play with it in our favour and not against us, otherwise will end up taking our money away. And let me tell you that a $600+ billion dollar company loves taking money out of your pockets if it knowns we are making beginners mistakes (such as boosting a post).

A dumb way to advertise…

Let’s say you were convinced by your local magazine skilled salesperson to promote with them and be in front of 50+ thousand people that read the magazine every single month. The idea sounds tempting but the reality is that the results aren’t that awesome as they sound, why? Imagine you spend anywhere from $350+ to $2,000+ in such adverting. You pay for ALL these people to see your advertisement. Every single one.

But only a small % are potential customers, right?

This is true of all print, tv, radio and magazine advertising. You pay for everyone to see your ad, regardless if they are likely to buy or not! Essentially, it can really be a waste of money! 💸

A Smarter way to Advertise…

With Facebook Ads, the game is different! You can actually choose meticulously who you show your ads to. So if you target your ideal customer, then you only pay when your ideal customer sees your ad! How awesome is that!

Since we are only showing our ads to our ideal customer, we are getting much more for our money. We can spend very little, and get a lot in return, a LOT if you do it right…

To Do It Right

First, you have to avoid the temptation of boosting a post, that friendly looking button isn’t as friendly as you think. It actually is more like the equivalent of the lazy way to do things and you aren’t about that! 🤓 Lazy ways won’t bring outstanding results when it comes to advertising… or anything as far as I was taught.

Why is it the lazy way? Well, it is for you to take quick and easy action, but you will be missing out on TONS of ways you can optimise your ad, like

  • In-depth targeting 🎯 options: For instance, location, interests, behaviour, etc.
  • Ad scheduling 🕙
  • Call to action button: “Shop Now”, “Sign up”, “Contact us”, etc. they all make a difference depending on what your goal is
  • Campaign goals 🏁 clicks to website, website conversions, offer claims, etc.

And the list goes on… I honestly can make an entire blog on why you shouldn’t just boost a post but the bottom line will be the same, DO NOT DO IT!🖐🏽

If you want to bring real results 💰 with Facebook Ads, educate yourself 👩🏽‍💻, talk with people that are already doing it, and I’m not talking about just actively posting on social media but actually Advertising on it with a clear end goal. You can also talk to an expert or someone that is highly involved in behind the scenes of social media. The “nerd” can bring you way better results than that one with a massive following that impresses us at first sight.

Take Home

1️⃣ Based on your observation of your current customers your ideal customer take a look of this Facebook Ad Demographics and select what is relevant to you and your business, you may find that some options may bring an incredible accuracy on what kind of people you want to put your ad in front of and some others are pretty irrelevant to your business.

2️⃣ Take the time to think on what you ultimately want to achieve, whether that is to promote your business Page, to get more leads, get more website visitors, promote your send message button (to engage people into a conversation), simply create brand awareness, promote an event, or a new special product/promotion/service you’re offering, etc. honestly, do the homework of actually taking a pen and paper and writing down what is it that you want to achieve based on your current situation.

3️⃣ Take action, as cliche as it may sound, just do something different and you will attract different and surely better results. Whether doing something different means, learning yourself about social media advertisement (if that is something you’re passionate about) or contacting someone that can potentially help you out with that or simply make mistakes yourself by try and error (costly though). If you have extra bucks to burn try it yourself, take my word in this you’re going to lose some money trying to figure it out yourself but if it is something you’re willing to invest time and effort just GO FOR IT.

In the end, your goal should not be just to get more engagement, but to get people to take an action — visit your website, sign up for an event, opt-in with their email for a contest, buy a gift card, or simply come in to your business — and you should do everything you can to achieve those results in the most effective way.

GO!
