Don’t Fall In Love With Your Startup Idea Until You’ve Answered These 5 Questions

Every startup idea seems good at first, but how do you know whether it’s actually an idea worth building?

Having a new idea for a startup is a lot like having a crush. Assuming you’ve had a crush — and I’m sure you have — you know exactly what I mean. You can’t stop thinking about the other person. You constantly imagine how great the future will be with that person. You see only the good attributes while ignoring all of the person’s flaws. And so on.

The same thing happens with a new startup idea. At first, it seems brilliant. You’re certain everyone will love it. Building it will be easy. Selling it, even easier. Your biggest worry is other people seeing just how brilliant the idea is and trying to steal it. Better get those NDAs ready!

This is the infatuation stage of startup ideas. Simply put, the infatuation stage is when entrepreneurs consider whether or not an idea is worth pursuing. They do this by trying to imagine a world in which they’ve successfully executed the idea so they can understand how good (or bad) that world might be once they’ve reached it.

Just like with a budding relationship, the infatuation stage of a startup idea is unavoidable. And…
